me   family   rants   friends   quotes   of the day

warning, teal deer abound

I don't pretend to be witty; I say what I mean, and if it amuses you, great. If it invokes flames, whatever, I need something new to rant about anyway.

...2 days later...
(major league baseball called off? now that's an attack on America)

Goddamnit, this world sucks sometimes. With me?

This Tuesday, September 11, 2001, I stopped by work on my way to a play with my grandmother. My cell phone rang seconds before I went inside; my stepmother frantically telling me to turn on a tv or radio. I walked into the store to see my friend had the news already on. We sat and watched for about twenty minutes, in time for me to get caught up on the two planes that had struck the World Trade Center towers, and the wreckage of another at the Pentagon. I noticed before he did the large portion of the first tower falling away... At that point I went to my Nana's to watch for another hour before the show. I spent the rest of the day alternately paying little attention to a musical comedy and phoning my father and friend at work to report details to the other people at the table I was at. It was as if we weren't even part of the world, which normally would have been nice for a show; this time it bordered on terrifying, not knowing what was happening during such circumstances. I spent the rest of the night at work with another friend, watching the news, helping the few customers we had, sick of news coverage and terrible stories. I guess I understood... Part of me just wanted to go home, but we realized we were helping a bit, to keep little kids from having to watch this... We rented a lot of Barney that evening. It's still going a few days later; nothing but news on tv, and we're grateful for the updates, the little bits of knowledge amidst the multiple camera angles and tearful eyewitness accounts. To hear about the people helping, the people helping the helpers, etc. I'm likely going to donate blood Saturday, at our scheduled blood drive. I'd have liked to go already, but it's always been rough on me (though I donate as regularly as I'm allowed), and I can't go to work right after. Thanks for letting me talk for a bit. I've got a few rants, but I'll shelve 'em for now, or just subject those around me to 'em. I just want to say that the folks on SithAcademy-talk have been great, trust them to rely on honest, calm discussion and rational, intelligent ideas. Good to see there's some sense in our country yet. Everyone is in my prayers, for what it's worth... And a comment on the title... It's not me making a joke. It's just me noting that, despite our "everything as normal, wherever possible" attitude about things, we're going to suspend the nation's favorite pasttime. That kinda says something. Or maybe it's just me.
